Born by the River:
People of the Mississippi River Towns May 3 through December 31, 2006
What do people in Minneapolis think about the Mississippi? How is life different in other
Minnesota river towns? Find out as Minnesota opens its doors to host the statewide
traveling art exhibit Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River Towns. This
exhibit and companion 144 page book by artist Ron Merchant take a fascinating look
into the lives of Minnesotans living by the Mississippi. Through 36 insightful paintings,
over 60 photographs and 26 first person interviews you share in the tales of life by the
river.
Two critical essays by art historian, Rosle B. Ultan, and writer, Britt Aamodt, place the
project in the continuum of Minnesota history and make comparisons to other artists
and writers who influenced this journey.

Born by the River:
People of the
Mississippi River
Towns invites you
into the lives of
twenty-six people in
eight locations on
the river in
Minnesota. Your
journey starts at the
Headwaters in Itasca
State Park, then
through the towns of
Jacobson, Saint
Cloud and Elk River.
After stopping in the
metropolitan area of
Minneapolis and
Saint Paul, you finish in the historic towns of Red
Wing and Winona. Through his award winning
paintings and interviews, Ron Merchant once again
introduces you to life on the Mississippi.

Hamline University is proud to present a special presentation by art historian and faculty
member Roslye B. Ultan and artist/author Ron Merchant. They will present an analysis of
contemporary art history and look at how living artists build on the past and form the future
of current art. Drawing on the project Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River
Towns, the dialog will illuminate the changes in Minnesotans' connection to the Mississippi
River and the way art has documented and expanded our understanding of the times in
which we live.
After the presentation, an open discussion will enable the audience to reinforce their
connections and share their observations of art and the contributions of artists to the
community.
Free admission.
